Security agencies probing foreign military jet flyover at Eteringbang

Senior Government officials have confirmed to News Source that the Guyana Defence Force and other security agencies are probing the presence of an unuthorized military jet in Guyana’s airspace.

On Tuesday, the military fighter jet was spotted flying over Eteringbang in the Region Seven area. Some miners captured the flyover on camera and alerted the security agencies.

The Guyana Defence Force’s Eteringbang base also noticed and got additional reports of the incursion.

A senior Security Official told News Source that based on all initial reports and various video recordings of the flyover, the military jet appears to be one belonging to neighbouring Venezuela.

“It was one jet and it appears to have been an intimidation tactic, but it is now being fully investigated”, the Source said.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been briefed on the situation.

In the past few months, Guyana has found itself facing heightened tension with neighbouring Venezuela as the country continues to claim Guyana’s land and has issued a decree claiming additional maritime space.

Just over a month ago, Venezuelan Navy vessels entered Guyana’s exclusive economic zone and arrested two boats of Guyanese fishermen. The fishermen and their vessels were taken to Venezuelan and kept in custody for two weeks.

They were only released following the intervention of the Venezuelan President as the international community started to express concern about the situation.
