Deborah Backer to resign from National Assembly

Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly and Executive Member of the APNU and PNC, Attorney-at-Law, Deborah Backer is expected to issue a statement this week indicating that she intends to resign as a Member of Parliament to focus on her health.

Multiple Opposition sources have indicated to News Source that she has made the decision to cut back on her political work for now, as she pays more attention to her health.

Ms. Backer who has been an Opposition Member of Parliament for over a decade and is one of the most outspoken members in the House and in the Opposition has been ill for the past few months, forcing her to miss a number of parliamentary sittings.

While details of her illness have not been made public, News Source  understands that Ms. Backer may be following her doctor’s advice to rest more to ensure a full recovery.

She is one of the most vibrant Members of the National Assembly and political watchers have said that her resignation will be a big blow to the Opposition. “She is very smart and knows and understands the Constitution well. She is also very good with the standing orders”, one political analyst said.

Just last Friday, Opposition Leader David Granger indicated that Ms. Backer is expected to make a public statement in the new week. He refused to go into details about what that statement would entail.

The joint opposition parties in the National Assembly hold a slim one seat majority over the governing party. With that majority, every vote counts when it comes to legislation brought before the House.
