Deputy Police Superintendent to face rape charge after complaint by female Corporal

A Deputy Superintendent of Police and Divisional Detective in ‘B’ Division has landed in hot water after a female Corporal has come forward with allegations of rape against him.

The Director of Public Prosecutions has recommended that departmental charges be filed against the leading Police Detective in the Berbice region.

Police Commissioner Seelall Persaud confirmed on Tuesday that an investigation was carried out by the Force after a female corporal claimed that she had been raped by the Deputy Superintendent.

The Commissioner said that the file on the investigation was sent to the DPP who after review of the file recommended charges.

But the Police Commissioner explained that the Force’s regulations stipulate that any disciplinary action to be taken against police inspectors and ranks above that rank must be done by the Police Service Commission (PSC).

As a consequence, the file and the DPP’s advice have been sent to the PSC. “I don’t know what decision they will take since its a constitutional body,” the Police Commissioner said.

He explained that the PSC has several options at its disposal but that will need to be communicated to the Force.

Since the allegation, the Deputy Superintendent has proceeded on leave but the Commissioner has assured that he is the substantive the Crime Chief in Berbice.

Persaud said he was unaware of other allegations of corruption against his Officer but assured that there was a procedure to deal with these complains, once reported.
