Maduro plays down border row and claims troop build up was narco fighting effort

Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro on Tuesday afternoon delivered an address to the 70th United Nations General Assembly in New York but while he championed the need for peace across the world, he had little to say about the ongoing Guyana/Venezuela Border controversy.

Brushing over the matter, Maduro extended appreciation to UN Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon for facilitating talks between himself and Granger on Sunday.

“Some issues arose there which would have to be resolved and I appreciate that Ban Ki Moon responded to the request from Venezuela and last Sunday the diplomacy of peace did prevail and we were able to take a positive decision and resolve the issue and so the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela continues to have to deal with these difficult challenges but we approach all of these issues with the diplomacy of peace and through dialogue and communication we are trying to avert threats to our people,” he said.

He told the General Assembly that the military buildup close to the Guyana/Venezuela border last week was only a routine operation that his country was carrying out at its borders with Guyana and Colombia as part of its fight against narcotics.

“There was the problem of drug traffickers and now today I can say that we really have positive hopes that the situation resolved and we would be able to resume normal working relations with the government of Colombia and the same applies to our sister Republic of Guyana“, he said.

During the morning session Guyana’s President David Granger delivered an address that strongly rebuked Venezuela’s aggression and claim to the Essequibo.

Maduro expressed no confidence in that claim but acknowledged that on a large-scale, issues of war and peace were already addressed and referenced unjust wars that have killed millions of people in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

The Venezuelan President said “today it would be a recognition of the tragic mistakes that have been committed to invade, bomb and to bring the war to sister nations of the planet,” and  he cited the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and Syria, which led to more misery, destruction and terrorism by greed of foreign powers over energy resources of these countries.

“No one has the power in this world, nor the United Nations Charter, or any right to judge or prejudge the political regime of another country, or pretend regime change from any government or system of the world,” said Maduro.

He also stressed that ” We the peoples of the planet , we are ready even today in 2015 to save humanity from the scourge of inequality , poverty , looting , exploitation , which are the real causes of the wars that have known “.
