Even as the Guyana Government is getting ready to dispatch new Diplomats to its missions overseas, President David Granger has laid out his expectation for the persons who will take up those posts as High Commissioners, Ambassadors and Consul Generals.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday in New York, the President said this is the age of economic diplomacy and Ambassadors must be able to sell Guyana.

“The economic survival of our country is paramount but this does not mean we will not pay attention to specific strategic threats that we face,” he added.

He said he is looking for ambassadors who can sell Guyana, “… not only rum and rice but bring direct foreign investment to the country.”

Mr. Granger said there are several areas of interest that exist between Guyana and other countries that may need a re-examination. “In a nut shell the next breed of Guyanese diplomats must be able to propel our economic diplomacy,” Granger asserted.

Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Minister Carl Greenidge clarified that the government has not made any new diplomatic appointments as yet apart from the new Ambassador to Venezuela who is expected to be accepted within the next two weeks.

Greenidge promised that he other appointments will be done sequentially in the coming weeks. Last week, the government said it had written to all Guyanese diplomats, including High Commissioners, Ambassadors and Consul Generals in all embassies notifying them of their likely replacement in coming weeks.

The Foreign Minister said a number of new Ambassadors have already been identified but the President will make the final decision.

Minister of State Joe Harmon on Wednesday said that the notices have been served and the replacements and removals will occur by the end of October.
