Mini-bus driver sentenced to 56 months in jail for causing death by dangerous driving

Mini-bus driver, Robert Grant, will have to spend the next 56 months in jail after being found guilty for causing the death of an East Bank Demerara man, by dangerous driving.

The verdict and sentence were handed down on Friday by Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates Court and they came less than a year after the driver was first charged.

The incident took place back in May 2016, as Garden of Eden resident, Keith Simon, was walking along the roadway.

He was reportedly hit down from behind by the speeding mini bus.  The mini-bus driver had claimed that he hit the pedestrian after attempting to swerve from another vehicle that was heading towards him. It is unclear whether the driver will now make an appeal of the verdict.

Guyana recorded over 140 road deaths in 2016.
