Mother pleads guilty and gets 4 years,6 months in jail for cocaine in handbag, as daughter walks free

One week after a mother and her 19-year-old daughter were charged for cocaine trafficking,  the two were back in Court today, but this time, the mother entered a guilty plea insisting that it was all her doing.

The mother, Kavita Persaud, claimed that she used her daughter, Rachel Narine as a drug mule because she is a very poor woman who needed a way out of poverty. She fought back tears as she asked the Magistrate for mercy.

Mercy came in the form of a jail sentence of 4 years and 6 months and a fine of $7.1 million.

The daughter, Rachel Narine, was freed after the mother’s guilty plea.

The 19-year-old was arrested at the Cheddi Jagan Airport last week as she prepared to board a flight to New York.

Over six pounds of cocaine was found in her handbag. She was immediately arrested and following questioning, her mother was also arrested.

The mother was ushered off to the female prison this afternoon, while the daughter walked out of the courthouse as a freed woman.
