Rohee wants evidence of PPP “criminal cabal”

Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee was reminded by the Speaker of the National Assembly on Wednesday that Members of Parliament enjoy Parliamentary privilege in the House.

The Speaker’s caution to the Home Affairs Minister came after Member of Parliament for A Partnership for National Unity, Desmond Trotman issued a statement  regarding a letter he received from the Home Affairs Minister. The APNU member considered the letter a threat.

Mr. Trotman said he was written to by the Home Affairs Minister requesting evidence about a statement he had earlier made in the National Assembly.

Trotman during the budget debates had stated that “you should get out of your ivory tower and go on the streets. You will be surprised when you hear what people are saying. You will hear them saying to the majority that in the PPPC we have a criminal cabal and dictatorship to dismantle and dismantle it we must”.

A few days after that statement, Rohee wrote Trotman indicating to him that he has asked the Guyana Police Force to investigate the claims that the PPP has a “criminal cabal”. In the letter, Rohee said if Trotman fails to go to a police station to provide evidence, he has asked the Police Commissioner to dispatch ranks to question Trotman on the same matter.

On Wednesday, Trotman told the National Assembly that he does not intend to cooperate with the police in the “charade” and if the Minister feels as strongly as “he claims about the matter, I recommend that he institute charges and place me before the courts”.

The Member of Parliament said he will not be intimidated into silence. Minister Clement Rohee said the Government is committed to the dismantling of any criminal cabal.
