TVG Cameraman sentenced to 25 years after found guilty of rape

A cameraman who was attached to TV Guyana, Channel 28 was today found guilty of the rape of a 13-year-old female relative and sentenced to 25 years in jail by Justice Navendra Singh.

It took the jury just a few hours to unanimously return the guilty verdict against 39-year-old Andre Hetsberger after listening to two days of testimony.  The entire trial was held in camera.

After the jury returned the guilty verdict and the judge sentenced the cameraman to jail, he broke down in tears as he was escorted out of the court-house.

Hetsberger was charged back in January of 2015 of the offense of rape after a 13-year-old relative who he and his wife cared for, complained that he had sexually molested her. He was granted bail at the Magistrate level of his trial.

The young man maintained his innocence throughout the court case. Since his arrest and trial, he kept a low profile as a media worker and remained in the employ of TVG.

Just a few weeks ago, he appeared at a news conference to provide coverage much to the surprise of other members of the press who had not seen him since the charge was filed against him in 2015.

Some of his TVG colleagues had expressed shock over the rape charge, saying that he always appeared quiet and to himself.
