Guyanese teacher dies in Antigua prison after found guilty of rape

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Less than two weeks after he was found guilty of rape and remanded to prison and 11 days before he was due to be sentenced, former school teacher Jaswick Jones collapsed and died at Her Majesty’s Prison.

Jones was reportedly in the prison yard when he took ill and died shortly afterwards yesterday.

The 56 year old, who could have been jailed for life for the sexual offence against a 14-year-old girl, was said to be diabetic and had an enlarged heart.

He had claimed during his trial in the High Court that he was wrongfully accused of raping the child and said it was not possible because of the aforementioned health conditions. The jury reached a unanimous guilty verdict on November 21.

The former St Joseph’s Academy teacher, who is originally from Guyana, was due to be sentenced on December 12 for the rape. (Antigua Observer)
