
Police investigators are probing the death of a prisoner at the Camp Street jail. The man was reportedly found dead between late Sunday night and early on Monday morning.
In a statement issued on Monday afternoon, the Guyana Prison Service identified the dead prisoner as Brian Blount and said he was found hanging in a cell at the Georgetown Prison.
The Prison Service said the man was on remand on a murder charge.
“He last attended Court at Linden on July 22, 2013 and returned to Georgetown Prison on July 24, 2013. On his return to prison, a search was conducted on his person and five (05) parcels of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis sativa was found in the hollow section of three (03) cakes of “blue soap” which he had in his possession”, the release stated.
According to the Prison Service, the matter was reported to the Police. The prisoner Brian Blount was last seen alive at about 21:50 hours on July 28, 2013 by Prison Officers who visited the Division as a normal routine. The police are presently investigating the report.
Officials at the Georgetown Prison and the Prison Headquarters have refused to make any comment on the death.
