Three killed in late-night De Willem accident

Three men lost their lives last evening after a speeding car that was driven by a 19-year-old slammed into them as they stood along the roadway at De Willem on the West Coast of Demerara.

The car only came to a stop after slamming into a nearby bar and another vehicle.

The three dead men have been identified as 23-year-old Carlito Gobin, 41-year-old Keram Rampersaud, and 44-year-old Ayube Mohammed.

Three other persons were injured including the 19-year-old driver, Matthew Ambikar.  They are all hospitalized with multiple injuries.

It is suspected that he was driving under the influence of alcohol and racing another car along the public road when he lost control and slammed into the three men on the roadside before crashing into the bar. The incident took place just before 10 o’clock last night.

Eyewitnesses said the car that was being driven by the 19-year-old was going at high speed and when he lost control, it happened suddenly.

The three men were not given enough time to move out of the way as the car slammed into them, pitching their bodies onto the roadway.

Police investigations into the late-night fatal accident are ongoing.
