60-year-old man to stand High Court trial for alleged sexual activity with a child family member

A 60-year-old Essequibo businessman has been committed to stand a High Court trial for allegedly engaging in sexual activity with a child family member.

The accused, Haimchand Takram, was charged under the Sexual Offences Act. The alleged incident took place in September 2022.

On Wednesday, the case was heard at the Anna Regina Magistrates’s Court, where Magistrate Esther Sam carried out a paper committal.

The Magistrate ruled that based on the Statements and Exhibits tendered before the court, there is enough evidence for the accused to stand trial at the next session at the Suddie Supreme Criminal Court. In the meantime, bail was granted in the sum of $500,000.
