Five die in early morning Soesdyke-Linden Highway accident

Five persons including two teachers and a pair of siblings, lost their lives early this morning at Long Creek along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway in a two-vehicle smash-up.

Those who lost their lives have been identified as Linden teacher, Dwaylon Farrel and Kwakwani teacher, Rushell Leacock, her brother Eddo Leacock, Clinton Patterson and Urani Hall. The names of the injured persons have not been released.

News Source understands that the accident occurred when 24-year-old driver, Eddo Leacock, lost control of his car and suddenly veered into the lane of the car being driven by Dwaylon Farrel, which was being driven in the opposite direction.

Persons in the area said the cars were being driven at a fast rate at the time of the head on collision.

On the scene of the accident, the injured were pulled from the wreckage and taken to the Linden Hospital, where five of them were pronounced dead and four others who survived, were stabilized and transferred to the Georgetown Hospital for emergency care. Three of the survivors have been listed as critical.

The accident reportedly took place just after 8am, triggering a back-up of traffic as other drivers rendered assistance to those who were badly injured.

The Education Department in Region 10 and the Guyana Teachers Union have both extended condolences to the families of the two teachers who died, and the other persons who lost their lives in the early morning smash up.

Investigations are ongoing.
