The Central Housing and Planning Authority intends to shift its focus towards sustainable housing with increase attention on home ownership for the ordinary Guyanese, Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, has announced.
Speaking at the launching of the 2024 International Building Expo at the Ramada Hotel last evening, Minister Croal said initiatives like the International Building Expo, have been assisting the Government to drive its housing programme forward. He said the Government is surpassing its targets in both the allocation of house lots and and the construction of houses by the Government.
He said this year, the focus will be to build on the foundation already created.
“International building expo 2024 is a platform that will bring industry leaders and government together to see new options in housing and construction that can possibly re-imagine the housing policy, it can also help us to set an example for the rest of the Caribbean and South America, but more specifically it will reassure our people that we are working to ensure that every citizen has a roof over their head that they can call home,” the housing minister stated.
The Minister reiterated that the Government is well on track to distribute 50,000 house lots by next year. However, he noted that due to the change in the country’s economic landscape, the focus has been shifted to align with everything else that is taking place.

“We have been providing safe spaces for many of our fellow citizens who were unable to have access before for their children to find a comfortable environment, stability and new community and although it can seem elusive slowly, we are proving that anyone, nobody their circumstances we can change their status to having a home,” the Minister stated.
Meanwhile, Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water, Susan Rodrigues, said the Building Expo has provided a platform for large, small and start-up businesses to expand their reach.
“Most importantly while many associate this event with large local and foreign corporations, the International Building Expo is overwhelmingly by small and medium scale businesses including many startups who use it as a launching pad to catapult their business, “the Minister noted.

The 2024 International Building expo will be held under the theme: “Building on the Foundation of Sustainability and Unity”.
The event will feature the Housing Ministry’s “Dream Realized” exercise, where thousands of persons are expected to receive their house lots and land titles.
The Building Expo will take place from August 8 – 11 at the National Stadium in Providence.
