Investigators from the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission and the Ministry of Labour have traveled to the Region Eight mining community of St. Elizabeth Backdam, following the latest mining pit collapse, which has claimed the lives of two miners.
The investigators traveled into the community over the weekend to begin their probe of the deadly workplace accident, which occurred on Friday evening.
The two dead miners have been identified as Sherwayne Joseph and Imran Blake.
Initial reports coming out of the area state that on Friday, the two men and other miners were working in one of the gold mining pits, when the walls of the pit suddenly collapsed. At least four other miners managed to escape from the pit, but Joseph and Blake did not make it out in time, and were completely covered.
Their bodies were eventually retrieved from the mining pit and taken to the Mahdia Hospital, where doctors pronounced both miners dead.
