At least 11 miners are believed to have died after a mining pit at Konawaruk collapsed on Sunday in the Region 8 area.
Multiple sources from the community have reported the mining tragedy. Seven miners who were pulled from the collapsed pit were rushed to the Mahdia hospital where they are being treated.
According to reports, the incident occurred just after 2pm on Sunday as the miners were “washing” out the pit in their search for gold.
The Police and the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission have both been made aware of the tragedy. An investigation has already been launched.
There has been growing concern about some of the practices in many parts of the mining community that do not take occupational safety into consideration.
