Essequibo miner dies in another mining pit collapse

Just two days after a report on improving safety in the mining community was handed over to the government, yet another miner has lost his life in another tragic mining pit collapse.

The Guyana Police Force has reported that 38-year-old miner, Omet Samuels of Queenstown, Essequibo lost his life when a mining pit caved in and completely covered him while he was carrying out his gold search.

The incident took place on Wednesday just before 12:00noon at Toroparu Backdam, Cuyuni River. An investigation has been launched by the Police and the Geology and Mines Commission.

Two months ago, the government launched a Commission of Inquiry into mining disasters following a number of mining pit deaths. In one case, 10 miners lost their lives when their mining pit caved in.

The Commission has completed its work and handed in its report with recommendations to the government earlier this week
