Police in Mahdia and officers of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission are probing yet another mining pit collapse which resulted in the loss of life.

47-year-old miner, Terrence Lobert of Eccles, East Bank Demerara died today (Thursday) when the mining pit collapsed as he was working in it.

The man was buried several feet down and it took other miners more than three hours to reach his body.

According to sources in the area, the incident occurred around 9:30 this morning but the man’s lifeless body was not located until 1:30 this afternoon.

There were several other mining deaths for this year, forcing the government to launch a Commission of Inquiry into mining safety and the mining deaths.  That commission completed its work a few months ago and handed over a report to the government.

There have been over 25 mining deaths for this year already and all of them are linked to the collapse of mining pits.
