Mining pit collapse in Puruni Backdam claims life of 47-year-old miner

Police and mining investigators have traveled to the Puruni Backdam in Region Seven to probe a tragic mining pit collapse, which took place on Sunday and claimed the life of 47-year-old gold miner, Stephen Mark Samuel.

A Police statement on the tragedy indicated that Samuel was working in the pit at around 4 o’ clock on Sunday afternoon along with a number of other miners, when a section of the pit wall broke off and covered the miner.

An alarm was raised by the other miners, who eventually dug the man’s body from under the collapsed soil. He was taken to a health station in the area, where he was pronounced dead. A report was also made to the Police in the community, and an inspection of the dead man’s body revealed no marks of violence. A post-mortem examination is to be performed on the body.

This latest mining accident comes as Guyana is observing Occupational Health and Safety month. The Ministry of Labour has been traveling across the country to raise awareness of the need for better safety practices in the workplace.
