A 17-year-old youth, who worked as a miner, lost his life on Tuesday aftrernoon in a mining pit collapse at Cow Pen Backdam in the Puruni River area, Region 7.

The young man, who is originally from Parika, has been identified as Anthony Richard.

A Police report said the teenager and other workers were in a mining pit carrying out their work, when suddenly the land above him became loose and crumbled, covering him completely. The police said the mining pit was reportedly owned by the teen miner.

The police report also said other workers raised an alarm, and persons in the area responded.

The rescuers were able to dig away the soil that covered the teen miner, but by the time they got to his body, it was lifeless. He was taken to a nearby Health Centre, where he was pronounced dead.

The body was examined, and several abrasions were observed on his left leg, according to the Police.

A post mortem examination is to be conducted on the remains.
