11-year-old dies during illegal gold search in closed mining pit

The death of an 11-year-old boy in a mining pit is being investigated by the Police, the Natural Resources Ministry and the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission.

The lifeless body of Tyrone Tyrel DeSouza was pulled from a collapsed mining pit in the Fish Creek Backdam area in the North West District on Wednesday.

The mining pit is part of the mining claim owned by miner Terrence Yarde.  According to a Police report, Yarde had closed off and secured his mining area for the holiday season and left the site along with his workers.  However, the young boy and a group of other persons from the nearby communities, ventured onto the claim and started an illegal search for gold.

It was during their unauthorized mining efforts on Wednesday that the mining pit suddenly collapsed and covered the child with water and mud.

The other persons ran from the area after the collapse but raised an alarm. The body of the young boy was pulled from the collapsed pit the following morning.

Investigators are hoping to track down the adults who were in the company of the young child during the mining accident. The child is reported to have been a school drop out.
