Another mining pit accident at an interior location has claimed the life of a 37-year-old miner, triggering another investigation and renewing calls for better safety practices in the gold mining industry.

North West District miner, Omar Oselmo lost his life last Thursday when a gold mining pit collapsed and completely covered him at Sandhill Backdam in the Cuyuni River.

The incident reportedly occurred in the early evening as the miner returned to the mining site on his own to continue working.

A police report said it appeared as though the walls of the mining pit suddenly collapsed and Oselmo was heard screaming moments later.

His co-workers rushed to his rescue, but by the time they were able to dig his body out, it was to late.

His lifeless body was pulled from under the sand and the Police were summoned to the area.

The investigations are ongoing.

Just recently, the Gold and Diamond Miners Association encouraged gold miners to practice safer mining operations following a series of fatal mining accidents at various interior locations.
