As Guyanese at home were celebrating Independence Day on May 26, Customs Agents at Toronto’s Pearson Airport busted a traveler from Guyana on the same date with more 7 pounds of cocaine stashed in a number of shoes.
According to the Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA), the illegal drug worth over CND$437,000 was found in the shoes in the passenger’s bags.
The Agency said the cocaine was found using contraband detection technology at the airport.
“Some of the detection technology employed by the CBSA includes ion mobility spectrometry, x-rays and Narcotic Identification Kits. These tools, in combination with the officer’s knowledge, experience, training, enable successful enforcement actions”, the agency noted.

The border agents in Canada have not released the name or nationality of the traveler owing to privacy laws in Canada.
Meanwhile, in Guyana, the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit has launched its own investigations into the bust that took place in Canada. Checks are being made with regards to all of the security arrangements surrounding the flight to Canada from Guyana on May 26.
Currently, Caribbean Airlines is the only airline that has direct flights from Georgetown to Toronto.
