In an address to the nation this afternoon, Leader of the People’s National Congress and A Partnership for National Unity, Aubrey Norton, accepted that the APNU has now found itself in “virgin territory” of not being placed into Government or as the main opposition following Monday’s elections.
He said the elections cannot be considered to have been free or fair, but contends that the APNU will re-emerge better and stronger.
“As a consequence of September 1, 2025 Elections, which were not free and fair, our Party has found itself in virgin territory of not being the governing Party or the main opposition Party. APNU, of which the PNC is a major Party, has a wealth of experience in weathering the political storm. We will come through this and we will be stronger and better. We will continue the journey towards the goal of making this society a prosperous and equal one in which all of our citizens can enjoy all of the rights and benefits of the national resources of the nation. I give you the assurance that APNU will never abandon or desert you, however difficult the circumstances”, Norton said.
As results of Monday’s elections became clearer on Tuesday evening, Mr. Norton still expressed confidence that there existed a “slim” pathway to victory. That pathway vanished as the party took a hammering in its strongholds, losing the Districts where it previously enjoyed widespread support for years.
In his address this afternoon, Mr. Norton made reference to the EU Observer Mission’s preliminary report of the elections and its position that while election day was peaceful, the playing field was not even and the incumbent party had blurred lines with regards to the use of state resources for campaigning.
Mr. Norton said although the APNU had several concerns, it still found it important to contest the elections and will now maintain its political space.
“By contesting the Election, our Party has retained occupancy of political space that provides the opportunity to contest against the dictatorial tendencies of the PPP/C and advance the cause of social and economic justice, free and fair elections and a democratic culture in Guyana. As a major political party, it is necessary that we maintain and utilize that space for the ongoing mobilization of our people and all relevant forces in order to attain the kind of society in which the mores and the culture of democracy are firmly embedded”, the APNU Presidential Candidate noted.
Norton said the PNC was knocked down before and was able to pick itself up and return to the seat of government.
“I appeal to all APNU supporters to watch with us at this critical hour. We are like the oak tree. We will re-emerge better and stronger”, Norton assured.
The APNU is coming out of the 2025 elections battered and bruised, as the PPP returns to power, and the recently formed WIN party heads into the National Assembly as the main opposition. Already, there are calls for Norton to step down from the leadership position as the party heads into the National Assembly as a third force.
