Once comrades in arms, Tourism Minister Susan Rodrigues and Leader of the WIN party, Azruddin Mohamed, have taken off the gloves and are trading barbs at each other over corruption claims.
In a statement on her Facebook page on Sunday night, the Minister of Tourism, who is a former Minister within the Ministry of Housing, denied accusations of being involved in corrupt acts with the purchase of large pieces of prime lands and the construction of a massive apartment complex in Providence.
In responding to the claims by Mr. Mohamed, the Minister declared that she comes from money and has been around fancy things her entire life.
She admitted that she is the owner of multiple properties, but said none of them were acquired from the Government.
Rodrigues also said she has never received, and has never ever applied for any house lot through the Central Housing and Planning Authority or any other government agency.
She said Certificates of Title bearing her name were all bought from a private individual, executed through an Agreement of Sale.
The Minister also stated that apart from owning multiple properties, she is a shareholder in several companies in and out of Guyana. She said she can account for every cent of her wealth and has made declarations to the Integrity Commission.
She accused Mohamed of amassing his wealth from criminal activity and said he must answer for billions that he allegedly stole from the country, making reference to the tax evasion claims contained in a US indictment against Mohamed and his father. The Minister also accused Mohamed of being involved in money laundering.

Her response on Sunday night was triggered by a video released by Mohamed on Sunday morning. The video was shot on location in front of a massive apartment building that he said appears to be owned by the Minister and which covers a large piece of land. He also questioned the construction of a private home in a nearby community and the presence of seven vehicles at that home, many of them belonging to the Government.
Mohamed declared that Rodrigues is corrupt. Today, he released a WhatsApp number for persons to send information about the Minister’s alleged corrupt practices. He also released photographs of her previous visits to his home and meetings in the past. He said Rodrigues must explain her “generational wealth” and her acquisition of prime lands and involvement in big investment projects.
Just last week, the Agriculture Minister was forced to issue a statement about his private home after Mohamed questioned his accumulation of wealth and construction of a massive house in Berbice, while his son constructed a similar one on the East Bank of Demerara, as an apartment building remains under construction.
