January firings for facilitators of fraudulent driver’s license -says President Ali

Two weeks after President Irfaan Ali gave persons holding a “fraudulently obtained” driver’s license six weeks to surrender them and restart the process, he has announced that persons who facilitated the process for those license to be obtained fraudulently will be fired starting early in the new year.

The announcement comes following a comprehensive post-audit conducted by the government in collaboration with the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA), the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Ministry of Public Service, Government Efficiency and Implementation.

“Early in January you will see a lot of people being sent home, we have just completed the records of all of the license issued at GRA versus how many persons passed the theoretical test versus how many persons passed the practical test and I can tell you, the results is alarming,” the President said.

In addition, the President said the driver’s test will now be digitized to reduce the human bias, adding that the country must not be in a position where it loses revenues to corruption.

“We must never have the type of situation that robbed this country of hundreds of billions of dollars in revenue. So we building everything on system driven by technology on a digital backbone to improve efficiency and enhance accountability and transparency.

The President said the private sector will also get in line, adding that the move is part of a broader national effort to promote institutional integrity, digital transformation, and accountability.
