President Ali and Government and national security team visit US Navy aircraft carrier

At the invitation of the US Ambassador to Guyana, President Irfaan Ali and a team comprising a number of Cabinet members and members of the National Defence Board, visited the US Navy’s aircraft carrier, the USS Nimitz on Saturday.

The aircraft carrier is currently in the region.

In a statement, the US Embassy said that with over 4,000 crew members and operating some of the world’s most advanced aircraft, the USS Nimitz represents American naval excellence and the unwavering commitment of the United States to regional security and cooperation.

Ambassador Theriot emphasized that the United States and Guyana share a commitment to regional security and prosperity. She said the visit of the USS Nimitz demonstrates the US Government’s dedication to working hand-in-hand with Guyana and our Caribbean partners to address shared challenges and build a safer, stronger hemisphere for all our citizens.”

The embassy explained that as part of this deployment, the USS Nimitz is conducting exercises with armed forces from the Guyana Defence Force, strengthening alliances and building the capabilities needed to address security challenges together. Guyana’s role as a founding member of the Shield of the Americas Coalition underscores our shared commitment to hemispheric security.

“Our partnership extends beyond military exercises. Under the shiprider agreement between the United States and Guyana, Guyanese law enforcement officers embark on U.S. law enforcement vessels to assist in conducting counter-drug patrols and pursuing suspected drug traffickers that flee into Guyanese territorial waters—a testament to our collaborative approach to combating transnational crime”, the Embassy said.

President Ali’s team included Foreign Minister Hugh Todd, Foreign Secretary Robert Persaud, Home Affairs Minister, Oneidge Walrond, Senior Minister of Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh, Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan, Head of the National Intelligence Security Agency Colonel Sheldon Howell and National Security Advisor, Captain Gerry Gouveia.
