Seven in custody over Cuban kidnapping allegation; Police constable and alleged victim among persons held

The Guyana Police Force this afternoon announced that a full investigation has been launched into reports about the alleged kidnapping of a 29-year-old Cuban national, which reportedly took place on Wednesday.

The alleged victim has since been found and has been taken into custody, along with a number of other persons.

In a statement, the Police today said that the investigations were launched after another Cuban national filed the report and told investigators that the 29-year-old victim was being held against his will and that there was also a demand for money.

The Police said its investigations led ranks to a location in Grove on the East Bank of Demerara, where the alleged victim was located in a motor car along with other persons.

During a search, the Police said an air pistol matching the description of the object seen in a photograph connected to the kidnapping report was found inside the vehicle.

Three suspects were arrested and have been placed in Police custody. A Police Constable of Grove, East Bank Demerara; a 23-year-old Cuban national of Grove, East Bank Demerara and a 41-year-old taxi driver of Middle Road, La Penitence, Georgetown have all been placed into custody.

Additionally, the Police have also arrested another driver, a mechanic and a 34-year-old unemployed Cuban national in connection with the probe.

The Police also explained that two motor cars and several cellular phones were taken into possession and lodged as part of the investigation.

The alleged victim was also interviewed by investigators and placed into Police custody.

Further enquiries have revealed inconsistencies surrounding the initial report, and investigators are continuing efforts to determine the full circumstances of the matter.
