A teenage schoolboy from the East Coast of Demerara has been arrested over the assault of a 23-year-old Police Constable.

According to a Police report, the Policeman was on duty on Thursday afternoon when he intervened in a fight between two schoolboys on the roadway.

In response to the Policeman stopping the fight, one of the boys armed himself with a piece of wood and lashed the Police Constable to the back of his head, causing injuries.

The Policeman was treated at a nearby Health Centre, while the teen attacker was arrested and taken into custody. He could face charges in Juvenile Court early in the new week.

The Ministry of Education recently announced a plan to tackle the growing cases of violence and violent acts involving school children in and out of the school environment.
