Opposition Member of Parliament and Leader of the Forward Guyana Movement (FGM), Amanza Walton has stated that while she is not pre-occupied with her exclusion from the Parliamentary Committees, she sees the Government’s objection to her sitting on those committees as nothing more than hypocrisy and its ongoing attempts to neutralize “independent voices”.
Despite being nominated by the other two Opposition parties in the National Assembly, We Invest in Nationhood and A Partnership for National Unity, to sit on a number of the Parliamentary Committees, the Speaker of the National Assembly turned down those nominations over the number of votes that Walton’s party received at the last elections.
The Forward Guyana Movement won one seat in the National Assembly with its just over 4000 votes.
In a recorded statement last evening, MP Walton said it was the current Government that supported the election of Lennox Shuman and Dr. Asha Kissoon to the position of Deputy Speaker during the last Parliament although their parties gained far less votes in 2020 that what her party gained in 2025.
“The selective application of numbers really does tell you all you need to know about the PPP/C. If you recall in 2020, the very Gail Teixeira that objected to my nomination, supported the nomination of Lennox Shuman as deputy speaker in defiance of a long history that says the deputy speaker position should go to the largest opposition party,” MP Walton noted.
Ms. Walton recently led the charge for Parliament to reconvene after 100 days without a single sitting. She had mounted a campaign that saw her writing local and international bodies complaining that the country’s Parliamentary democracy is under threat.
Walton said her exclusion from the Committees will not change her position in calling for Parliamentary accountability.
“Understand that that position has not changed because the PPP and Manzoor Nadir to exclude me. If anything it vindicate me, because the government that delays committee for eight months and then manipulate the composition of that committee to neutralize independent voices, reveals everything you need to know about that government,” Ms. Walton said.
A mathematical formula was used to exclude MP Walton from the committees, but said she intends to put that issue behind her.
“For my part, I don’t intend to be consumed with these arguments about committee appointments because those who believe that exclusion from Committees amounts to exclusion from public service— fundamentally misunderstanding why I entered into politics in the first place’” Walton Desir noted.
The Opposition MP said she will make herself available to support Opposition members on the various committees, and offered thanks to both the WIN party and the APNU for offering up her name as a nominee to sit on the parliamentary committees.
