As Police investigations into the death of a Cuban national at the Muneshwers’ Houston Terminal continue, a Filipino national employed as a machine operator has admitted to placing two 40-foot containers on the western side of the compound, but said he saw no one there at the time.
In a statement this morning, the Police confirmed the death of 23-year-old Alex Cuban national, Jesus Gonzales Beria.
At the time of his death, Gonzales Beria was working with a construction company that was contracted by Muneshwers to carry out land filling within the compound at Houston, East Bank Demerara.
Initially, reports suggested that the Cuban national was killed in the incident on Thursday, but the Police, this morning clarified that the incident reportedly occurred between 14:36 hrs and 16:00 hrs on Wednesday, August 26, 2026. It was not until Thursday, at around 08:40hrs that the matter was reported to the Police after the man’s body was discovered.
Police detectives were immediately dispatched to the scene.
Preliminary investigations led the police to a Filipino national, who was operating a machine at the time Gonzales Beria was crushed to death.
The Filipino national explained to the police investigators that he used an empty-container handler to position two 40-foot containers on the western side of the compound between 14:36 hrs and 16:00 hrs on Wednesday. The operator reportedly indicated that he did not recall seeing anyone in the area where the containers were placed.
It was not until Thursday, at around 08:30 hrs that employees discovered Gonzales Beria beneath the containers and raised an alarm.
The containers were subsequently lifted, and Gonzales Beria was found lying motionless in a pool of blood with multiple injuries about his body. A pair of long boots and a yellow safety helmet were found nearby, the police reported.
Emergency Medical Technicians were summoned to the scene, and Gonzales Beria was confirmed dead by a doctor from the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
The body was escorted to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
As part of the investigation, a number of workers were questioned by the police. The Labour Department is also expected to probe the workplace accident.
