Elderly woman succumbs to injuries after being hit down by GDF member

An elderly woman has succumbed to the injuries she sustained in an accident two weeks after she was hit down by a vehicle being driven by a member of the Guyana Defence Force along Aubrey Barker Road in South Ruimveldt.

75-year-old Patricia Cornelius passed away last evening in the Georgetown Hospital after spending two weeks there in a critical condition.

The woman’s son, Lennox Carrol, told News Source that his mother spent her 75^th birthday in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on September 8 after being admitted there following the accident on September 1.

The 75-year-old suffered a fractured skull, along with injuries to her chest and collar bone.

Carrol said since the accident, there has been no word from the police about its investigations. He, however, noted that a member of the Welfare Department of the Guyana Defence Force reached out to the family while the woman was still hospitalised.

“I haven’t heard from the police as yet, no update. All they are telling me it is under investigation. The driver is still driving on the road. They haven’t given us any update, if they charge him or not,” he told News Source.

Adding his voice to the issue, APNU Member of Parliament and Attorney-at-Law, Dexter Todd said the coalition is deeply concerned and outraged over the circumstances surrounding the serious accident. He said the blackout of information is unacceptable.

“Of grave concern is the fact that, to date, the Government has still not reached out to Ms. Patricia’s family to provide assistance, offer meaningful support, or provide answers regarding the circumstances surrounding the accident. The lack of engagement is unacceptable, particularly given the reports that the vehicle involved may have been attached to the Office of the President,” MP Todd said during a recent press conference.

MP Todd said the accident must be properly and thoroughly investigated, and the investigation must be conducted in a manner that is transparent and credible.

“The APNU, therefore, renews its calls for a full transparent and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident involving Ms. Patrica Cornelius. The preservation and examination of all relevant evidence, including CCTV footage, vehicle tracking information, photographs, witness statements and other material capable of establishing what occurred. Full identification and disclosure of the vehicle and driver involved, including confirmation of whether the vehicle was owned by or assigned to the Office of the President, and direct engagement and assistance for Ms. Patricia’s family from the relevant government authorities while she remains unconscious in hospital,” MP Todd urged.

The Guyana Police Force is still to provide information on the fatal accident.
