Venezuela is not too pleased with statements made by President Irfaan Ali, during his recent UN General Assembly speech and has dispatched a Communique with its dissatisfaction

During his address President Ali said the Guyana Government will make the most of every diplomatic tool for a peaceful settlement of the border controversy as set out in the United Nations Charter.

The Head of State said Guyana’s territorial sovereignty is being challenged and threatened by Venezuela.

In response, the Venezuelan government deemed the President’s speech to be a misrepresentation. Guyana currently has Venezuelan before the International Court for a final juridical settlement of the controversy.

Venezuela continues to push for a return to the UN Good Offices process, but that process ended when Guyana moved to the International Court following several years of the Good Offices process bearing no fruit.

In response to the Venezuelan communique, the Guyana Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Guyana will remain true to the peaceful processes and denies any effort to depart from them.

The Guyana Government maintains that the International Court has already declared that it has jurisdiction to hear and determine the matter.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry has cautioned Guyanese not to share Venezuelan propaganda and misinformation on the controversy which may all be part of the neighbouring country’s campaign to continue claiming Guyanese territory.
