Police investigators in the mining town of Linden were called to the Linden Hospital today after a 5-year-old child was taken there with a bullet lodged in her throat.
The child was reportedly shot by a stray bullet while asleep last evening at her Half Mile, Wismar home.
According to a Police report, the girl’s mother said moments after she placed her daughter in her bed last evening, the child was heard crying.
The woman said when she checked on the child, the child told her that she had hit her neck.
The mother said she examined the child’s neck and rubbed petroleum jelly to the neck and put her back to sleep. However, by this morning, the child’s neck was swollen and the mother rushed her to the hospital.
On examination by doctors, it was realised that there was a warhead lodged in the child’s throat and a small entry wound was noticed on her neck. She was admitted for emergency surgery.
The child’s mother, Terriann Caesar, was interviewed by the Police, but she has not been detained.
The Police investigators visited the house and also noted a suspected bullet hole to the wall in the child’s room.
The Police said the area was searched, but no spent shell was found. A neighbour told the Police that a loud explosion was heard in the area at around 10 o’ clock last night, and a child was heard crying moments later.
Investigators are seeking to question the occupants of an adjoining apartment at the property. Checks at the apartment today turned up empty handed, as no one was at home at the time.
The investigations are ongoing.
