PPP to host Congress and party elections in May

The governing People’s Progressive Party, will be hosting its long-overdue congress to elect a new leadership after almost eight years.

The Congress which was schedule to be held in 2019, is now slated for early May, according party General Secretary, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo.

During a press conference today, Mr. Jagdeo said the party’s Central Executive Committee met last weekend and decided that the congress will sit in early May.

The last PPP/C Congress was held in 2016, and the delay following that was blamed on the no-confidence vote, the 2020 elections and the Covid-19 pandemic.

After the last Congress, Mr. Jagdeo was elected General Secretary of the party by secret ballot. The post was also contested by now Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony.

Today, Mr. Jagdeo said he is yet to decide if he will contest for re-election of the top party position.

“It will be presumptuous of me to say I will continue as General Secretary, it’s like I already determine. I will decide whether I will contest at that time but right now I am General Secretary until those elections are held,” Jagdeo said.

At the Congress, the PPP is expected to elect a new 32-member Central Committee, as party members both local and from the diaspora, meet to discuss critical issues within the party as well as in the country.

The outcome of the internal elections is likely to determine how the party shapes itself for the 2025 elections.

The General Secretary’s position is considered the most powerful position in the PPP.
