PNC Reform still to decide on date for party congress and elections

The General Council Meeting of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) ended on Sunday with no clear indication of a timeline or date for the party’s Biennial Delegates Congress.

This December will mark two years since the last Delegates Congress and Elections took place.

In September, the Leader of the PNCR, Aubrey Norton assured that the General Council would decide on the date for the Biennial Delegates Congress. However, during the Council’s two-day meeting at Congress Place over the weekend, Mr. Norton proposed that Congress takes place no later than August, 2024.

“No decision was made,” a Member of the Central Executive Committee (CEC) told News Source.

Another CEC Member said she left the meeting baffled, explaining that while the Leader suggested that the Congress be held no later than August 2024, there was no motion to that effect.

She said “it was not ratified by the General Council and it appears as though it has been kicked back to CEC” the Executive Member said.

It was explained that in offering his proposal, Mr. Norton was responding to a series of questions posed by the Ruimveldt Transformation Group.

While enquiring from the leadership when Congress will be held, the group pointed out that the party’s Constitution mandates that the Biennial Delegates Congress be held every two years.

Weighing in on the issue, a third Executive Member told News Source that while the Party Leader responded to the questions raised by the group, no specific date was put forward or approved. The member said the issue is now left hanging.

“No specific date in the month of August was given. So, it gone back now to CEC for them to make a decision,” the Central Executive Member said.

According to the Member, the situation is unacceptable.

“It is unacceptable. It is also a form of deception and I have lost all confidence in the leader because at the end of the day, he is on public record stating that the General Council will decide on a date for the congress. So, how come now, the issue has to go back to the CEC, when the CEC had referred it to the General Council,” the CEC Member said.

The Central Executive Committee is now expected to address the issues related to the Congress and Elections.
