A 64-year-old man from Kitty, Georgetown lost his life early this morning in an accident at the intersection of the Heroes Highway and the Mocha Main Access road on the East Bank of Demerara.
The dead man has been identified as Charles Richards.
The Police report stated that he was driving his motor car east along the Mocha Main Access road and failed to stop at the Stop line at the intersection. According to the Police, as he continued to drive across the intersection, his car ended up in the path of a sand truck that was traveling south along the Heroes Highway. The truck slammed into the car, pinning the elderly man inside.
The Police said Richards received multiple injuries to his head and upper body. He was pulled out of the car in an unconscious state and pronounced dead at the scene by a medical team that was summoned.
The truck was being driven by 29-year-old Arif Haniff. The Police said a breathalyzer test was conducted on the young driver, but there was no trace of alcohol detected. He was still taken into Police custody pending the completion of the probe.
A full investigation into the deadly accident is ongoing.
