A Friendship, East Coast Demerara family has been plunged into mourning with the death of their son, 23-year-old Joel Alexander in a Monday afternoon accident involving a sand truck.
A Police report said Alexander was driving his motorcar along the Soesdyke/Linden Highway when he overtook a car and ended up in the path of the sand truck that was being driven in the opposite direction.
The truck driver, Rohit Persaud said he pulled to the side of the roadway to avoid a head-on collision but the two vehicles that were both being driven at a fast rate, still collided.
The driver of the car was taken out of the wreckage in an unconscious state with multiple injuries to his head and body, He was rushed to the Diamond Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.
A post-mortem examination is to be carried out on the body.
The truck driver was administered a breathalyzer test. The results found no trace of alcohol in his system.
However, he was still taken into custody pending the outcome of the investigation.
