Chief Prison Officer dies after crashing into heap of sand on roadway

Chief Prison Officer, Patrick Perry, lost his life late on Monday night after crashing into a heap of sand that had been dumped on the roadway in the Melanie area, on the East Coast Demerara.

Police investigators have launched a probe.

An investigation revealed that at around 11:55pm on Monday, Perry was driving his motorcar along the Melanie roadway when he lost control of the car while going around a bend in the roadway.

The 36-year-old ended up slamming into a heap of sand which was at the side of the road. The impact resulted in the man’s vehicle toppling over several times. He was flung out of the car and landed on the roadway.

Persons in the area rushed to his side. Emergency Services were summoned and the Prison Officer was declared dead at the scene.

The Prison Director and a number of senior Police Officers visited the scene of the accident early this morning.
