7-year-old girl crushed to death in East Bank accident; Truck driver attacked, truck torched

A 7-year-old child died gruesomely in an accident on the East Bank road yesterday afternoon after being pinned to the median by a sand truck that was heading to the city.

The child was identified as Ciara Benjamin.

The impact of the crash separated the young girl’s body and it took hours for the truck to be pulled off the median and for the child’s body to be removed.

A surveillance video from the area just outside Agricola, showed the sand truck driving close to the median and suddenly coming to a stop after hitting the young girl and running up on part of the median.

Little Ciara was in the company of her aunt, Simone Barry, who claimed that she was holding the young girl’s hand and waiting to cross the road.

Other persons in the area recalled seeing the two standing at the median waiting to cross the road.

Several persons from the nearby community rushed to the girl’s aid but there was nothing that could be done. She was killed on the spot.

Eventually, some of them turned their anger on the driver and started to pounce on him. He was badly beaten and retreated to his truck as he was saved by Police officers who arrived on the scene.

When the truck was eventually pulled away, the child’s body was slashed in two, according to eyewitnesses.

More screams filled the area, as traffic was backed up for miles on both sides of the busy roadway. The girl’s body was removed and taken to the Georgetown Hospital.

The driver was taken into custody and his truck was set on fire and that caused more traffic chaos as night set in.

Police investigators are continuing their probe of the incident.
