Police Commissioner Clifton Hicken has announced that his ranks are set and ready for the country’s General and Regional Elections on September 1.
In a video recording released by the Police Force, Mr. Hicken said the elections are an opportune time for Guyana to show the world that it is peaceful, respectful and united nation.
He expressed confidence that the elections will be peaceful, but warned that swift action will be taken against anyone who threatens the peace.
Mr. Hicken’s statement comes as political parties are throwing jabs at each other about consequences that could follow e-day, should there be suspected electoral malpractice.
“Let it be clearly understood, any attempts to create disorder, intimidate others or break the law, will be dealt with swiftly and decisively. We have confidence in the people of Guyana. In recent years, we have made huge strides in Guyana, in building a safer, more orderly society, let us protect that progress,” the Commissioner.

He said the role of the Police Force is to maintain order and to ensure that every citizen can vote without fear or disruption. He assured that ranks will ensure that everyone is treated fairly.
“The Guyana Police Force is responsible for internal security and is fully prepared for elections, police officers and ranks will be present in all ten administrations and by extension the twelve administrative regions of the Guyana Police Force, not to interfere but to protect your constitutional rights participate peacefully and safely,” Mr. Hicken said.
Mr. Hicken is pleading with citizens to ensure that peace is maintained before, during and after Monday’s polls.
