Assistant Accountant remanded for theft of over $5M from Elections Commission

An Assistant Accountant of the Guyana Elections Commission has been charged and remanded to prison over the alleged theft of just over $5 million from the Commission.

The accused is 30-year-old Dikimbie Gittens of West Bank Demerara. He appeared in Court in Court today and was charged with the offence of Larceny by a Clerk or Servant committed on the Guyana Elections Commission.

During his Court appearance, Gittens was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge and was refused bail, as Magistrate Fabayo Azore set a 15th October 2025 date for the continuation of the matter.

The Court was told that Gittens was arrested by the Police on Monday during its investigation into the theft of the money from the Guyana Elections Commission. He was reportedly based at the GECOM Secretariat at Barrack and Fort Streets in Kingston, and it is suspected that the alleged theft took place between the 15th and 16th September 2025.

During the early stages of the investigation, several GECOM staffers were arrested and questioned, but the probe zeroed in on Gittens after he was allegedly found with a quantity of the missing money.

The matter remains under probe.
