Bartica businessman remanded for hammer beating murder of gambler

35-year-old Bartica businessman, Raymond Rupnarine, was charged this morning with the offence of murder committed on Bartica resident, Mark Braithwaite, who was beaten to death with a hammer.

The murder accused appeared at the Bartica Magistrates’ Court this morning and was not allowed to enter a plea to the indictable murder charge. Rupnarine has been remanded to jail until the 29th September when the matter will continue.

A post-mortem examination found that the victim died from multiple trauma to the head, and also found that his skull had been broken apart.

A police report of the incident which took place last Wednesday stated that Braithwaite was at a betting shop when he got into an argument with the owner’s son, Raymond Rupnarine, over spilling his drinks on the countertop of the bar.

The man reportedly hurled bottles at Rupnarine, and as he was leaving the premises, the suspect armed himself with a hammer and attacked the man, beating him with the hammer repeatedly to the head.

The victim was taken to the Bartica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The Police report of the incident stated that blunt wounds were observed to the man’s forehead, above his right eye and to the right jaw.
