Business Manager robbed of $10M while making night deposit at GBTI headquarters

The Guyana Police Force is investigating an armed robbery that took place in the compound of the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry Headquarters in Kingston, which is located just next door to the Police Force’s headquarters.

On Wednesday night, a manager attached to the Toucan Distributors company drove into the compound to make a night deposit of $10 Million and was robbed at gunpoint by two men dressed in complete uniform and riding motorcycles that are suspected to be the property of the Guyana Police Force.

The Manager told investigators that it was just before 10pm when he drove into the GBTI compound after being given the clearance by the security on duty. He said as he approached the night deposit box, he noticed the two men riding in the compound, but did not make much of it since they were completely dressed in the blue and black police uniform and were riding motorcycles suspected to belong to the Police.

However, just as he was about to make the deposit, one of the men whipped out a gun and pointed it to his head, while relieving him of the $10 million he was about to deposit. The two suspects hopped on their motorbikes and rode out of the bank’s compound leaving the manager confused even as he raised an alarm.

The Guyana Police Force in a statement last night, initially claimed that the suspects were wearing ski masks. However, after the robbery victim and the owner of the Toucan company made it clear that no such information was provided in the statement to the Police, the Guyana Police Force recanted that section of its statement, indicating that the suspects were indeed not wearing any ski masks.

The Guyana Police Force said there has been no arrest in the case, but several CCTV cameras located in the area are being reviewed as part of the investigations.
