PGS Security foils attempted robbery of late night deposit; Guard injured, Bandits escape empty handed

Security Guards attached to the Professional Guard Service’s Cash-in-Transit Unit were able to foil an attempt by gunmen to snatch a large sum of cash that they were depositing at Demerara Bank on Camp Street.

The incident took place just around midnight on Sunday.

According to eyewitnesses, the PGS security vehicle had just turned onto South Road from Camp Street to make a late night deposit on behalf of a client when the guard who emerged from the vehicle first came under attack from a group of gunmen.

Other security guards who were in the vehicle fired several shots at the gunmen, who quickly retreated while returning gunfire.

They reportedly made their escape in a white 212 Toyota motor car that was parked on Croal Street opposite the Bank’s South Road side.

A security guard at a nearby company, said the car was parked in the area for a while before the security van arrived. He said it appeared as thought he gunmen were staking out the area and waiting for its arrival.

Several companies use the services of security companies to make their late night cash deposits at various commercial banks.

An official attached to Professional Guard Service told News Source that one of the security guards was injured but the injury is not life threatening.

He also explained that the cash cargo was secured by the Guard Service as they prevented the robbery. The official praised the security guards for doing “an excellent job in defending themselves and the cash cargo”.

Other security guards attached to various businesses in the area said they were forced to seek cover when the loud gunshots rang out. One guard said he locked himself in his compound after hearing as many as 12 or more gunshots.

He said the Police responded quickly but by the time they arrived, the bandits had already made their escape after coming under fire from the PGS security unit.

Investigators have picked up several spent shells from the area and there are reports that a car matching the description of the one used by the bandits has since been nabbed at Diamond.  Other details are still emerging.
