Bystander shot dead, another injured during confrontation over West Ruimveldt property

A 43-year-old construction worker from West Ruimveldt was shot dead on Thursday afternoon, as he observed a confrontation between his neighbour and another man over a property.

A second bystander was also shot, and is hospitalised with serious injuries.

The dead man has been identified as Dexter Horsham.

A Police report indicated that just before 5 o’clock on Thursday afternoon, a 25 year old West Ruimveldt man was home with his reputed wife when he heard a loud knocking on the door.

The young man, Ezekiel Subhan, told investigators that when he looked outside, he saw a man who told him that he had bought the family property that he was living in from his great-uncle and he needed to move out immediately.

The youth said he was unaware of any sale of the family property and told the man that since he could not provide any evidence of sale or transfer of ownership, he should go to the Police.

In return, the man who was demanding the youth moves from the house, was joined by six other men who he brought to the scene in a pick-up and they all got into an argument with the 25-year-old.

By this time, persons in the area started to gather outside the house and when a fight broke out over the property, one of the men who arrived on the scene with the man demanding the property was seen arming himself with a gun and opening fire indiscriminately.

Two bystanders were shot and rushed to the hospital, where doctors pronounced one of them, Dexter Horsham dead.

Back at the scene, the men who came to evict the youth left the area hurriedly after the shooting. The Police said the pick-up vehicle that was used by the men was later found in the South Ruimveldt area and is owned by Majesty Fernandes.

Investigations are ongoing and there has been no arrest in the case as yet, but investigators have identified a number of the shooting suspects.
