Police Force receives $2 Billion in supplementary funding to assist with crime fight

The Guyana Police Force, through the Ministry of Home Affairs has been allocated just over $2 Billion in supplementary funding.

The additional money for the Guyana Police Force has been approved at a time when the country is experiencing an increase in gun related crimes.

However, Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn told the Assembly that he believes that serious crimes are on the decline. He blamed the increased murder rate on the 20 deaths in the Mahdia fire being categorized as murder.

“These two particular issues are what are driving the statistics in the direction we did not want it to go at the present time. The current statistics are minus 14.8%, so there is still a continuous reduction in serious crimes in the country,” the Home Affairs Minister said.

Benn said the Police Force is recording success in tackling crime across the country and must therefore, continue to receive full financial support.

He told the National Assembly that the additional funding will be used to get better equipment for the Police Force.

The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry recently voiced its concerns about the crime situation in the country, pointing out to the Police Force that its statistics showing a low crime rate is not supported by reality.
