Chamber of Commerce “tremendously” worried over escalating crime problem

The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) on Thursday said it has noted with tremendous concern the escalating crime situation occurring in the country.

While reporting a 29.8% decrease in serious crimes for the year when compared to the same period last year, the Guyana Police Force stated that it plans to tackle the spate of robberies being conducted by motorcycle riding robbers.

Several robberies have been caught on camera, but it’s unclear how many of the suspects have been held and charged.

But in a statement today, the GCCI said the perpetuation of violent crimes is of great concern to its members as it directly impacts the welfare of the citizens and enterprises of the country.

According to the private sector body, there seems to be an increasing rate of criminal activities against the business community.

“This has created an air of fear amongst the community in Guyana, as well as the wider citizenry. The GCCI calls on the authorities to take stern actions against the criminal elements and ramp up its campaign against crime fighting. The Chamber continues to remain willing to assist in any way possible and continues to view itself as a partner in development and nation building”, the Chamber of Commerce noted.

The Guyana Police Force has indicated that it is working to address the problem.
