Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum today said he did not want to say much on the investigations into the kidnapping and murder of 22-year-old Timehri resident, Ezekiel Smith, because he did not want to compromise the investigations.
Although Smith’s body was found more than two weeks ago after he was reported missing, the Guyana Police Force never released any information about the murder or the investigations.
Smith, who was an airport ramp attendant, died from a gunshot wound to the head. His body also bore other marks. Family members said days before his body was found dumped on Princes Street in Georgetown, they received a call from an unknown person demanding $9 million for his safe return. The family never raised the money.
Questioned about the probe this morning, Mr. Blanum would only say it is ongoing and he would not want to compromise it.

“At this time, I do not want to divulge certain information pertaining to the probe. I do not wish to compromise the investigations. As the investigation progresses, we will provide further updates to the media”, the Crime Chief said.
Pressed on whether the probe is also examining a possible link to an attempt to get drugs out of Guyana through the airport, the Crime Chief would only say that the investigations are ongoing.
Two weeks before his body was found, the 22-year-old man left his job at the airport. Police sources have said that they are following reports that he might have been contacted to get a package of drugs onto a flight, but having failed to do so, he never returned the illegal item to its owners.
Family members have said they are unaware of the reasons behind the man’s murder, but they are calling for a full and thorough probe.
